People make it happen

Designing for a better world.

Curiosity has always been the driving force behind the industrial- and digital product design at Design-People. Ever since 2005, we have been asking the questions that take our clients’ businesses to the next level. We prioritize understanding the needs, motivations, and barriers for each user in order to find out where the meaningful value lies for the business.

We know design isn’t just about making a product easy on the eyes. Our goal is to simplify and improve product experiences by applying a strategic design thinking approach to our work. In the end, we believe this leads to better solutions for people and for the planet.

From gathering data on test machines to shaping a connected IoT experience

Which valuable services, based on machine data, can help ensure optimal production conditions and improve workflows for operators of Ellepot machines? Design people worked to understand the needs of the users for the new solution. These insights were conducted through user interviews, observations, and lastly mapped out in a stakeholder workshop, creating the foundation for the concept. Ellepot live is a connected IoT experience, that visually comes to life through a mobile and desktop app. Providing valuable services when needed, the solution makes it easier to order supplies, keep track of production, and troubleshoot problems.

decoding relevant user needs

When Ellepot and design-people first met, Ellepot had already succeeded gathering data from test machines, in order to get a better understanding of machine use, wear, service, etc. Design-people was asked to decode relevant user needs and design a digital user experience, that will make Ellepot products even more attractive for the customer segment. To succed with the project the team at design-people used following expert tools.

“The handling of the machines proved to be as delicate as the potted crops and sprouts that the machines produce. It requires an almost intuitive flair to keep them running.”

Helping the operators

Special paper, trays and sphagnum are essential supplies. With Ellepot Live the customer scans a QR code on the paper roll, simplifying the order process and ensuring the right supplies will be delivered.

The operators keep track of various parameters when supervising the production and they are prepared to take action when needed. With the Ellepot Live app by hand, the operators can get notified by alarms and warnings and get help with troubleshooting, to help fix minor issues and keep the production at speed.

The Dashboard provides an overview of machines and processes, helping the production manager keep track of progress, number of batches, learn from machine history, error notifications and estimate upcoming productions, to ensure on time delivery for their own customers.
